Kampala businessman Desh Kananura who is facing charges of allegedly murdering his former employee Badru Kateregga, has secured bail at Kampala High Court.
The suspect is, however, still in the court’s holding cells pending the hearing of his bail application regarding the alleged fraud case he is facing.
Mr Kananura, a prime suspect in the murder case together with three others, is alleged to have tortured Kateregga to death over a Sh30, 000 tip he got from customers at his Panamera Bar last October.
Justice Lameck Mukasa granted him a Shs20 million bail on grounds that although he was charged in absentia, he returned to the country and was formally charged.
Mr Kananura is alleged to have fled the country following the incident, a claim he denied.
Justice Mukasa ordered him to hand over his passport to the office of the Registrar of the High Court. Mr Kananura is also supposed to report to the Special Investigations Unit of Police at Kireka, every month.
Failure to comply with the bail conditions, according to Justice Mukasa, will lead to his arrest.
Mr Kananura’s sureties were Makerere University Chancellor Mr Mondo Kagonyera, Mr Tom Mugenga, a director of Crane Bank, and Mr Richard Muhinda, the Presidential Advisor on Public Service Affairs.
His bail application for alleged fraud will be handled later today at Buganda Road Court.
It is alleged that between November 19 and December 23, 2011 Mr Kananura allegedly obtained Shs340 million from Haji Sulait Ssemakula of Sema Properties after claiming that he would supply him a caterpillar grader, a promise he reneged on.
