Hundreds of pupils in Kasese Municipality, who were excited to report back to school for the start of the new academic term, were shocked to learn that most of their schools had been closed.
On Tuesday, a team from the Kasese Municipal education office, accompanied by enforcement officers, closed 26 primary schools, accusing the proprietors of not meeting the minimum standards. Since the start of the year, the education office has been using local radio stations to warn parents against taking their children to schools that have been blacklisted.
The municipal education officer, Mr Emmy Kayiri, said after receiving reports that all the blacklisted schools had opened on Monday, his team swung into action to close them. “Most of the schools closed had poor sanitation, lacked good structures and had no qualified teachers,” he said.
Schools closed include: Heroes Children’s Ministry Primary School, Saruti Parents’ School, Bright Model Primary School and Dory Primary School. He urged parents of pupils from the affected schools to take their children to other schools.
