KAMPALA- Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga yesterday spent sometime explaining to students of Greenhill Academy the role of Buganda kingdom’s prime minister is much more than just collecting ettofaali (fundraising).
“One time I was watching television and a child was asked, ‘what is the role of the katikkiro? The child answered that ‘it is collecting ettoofaali,” Mayiga said. “The job of a Katikkiro is not to collect ettofaali only but to administer the kingdom on behalf of the king,” he explained.

Speaking to pupils and parents of Green Hill Academy yesterday, Mayiga explained further that the job of the Katikkiro is to represent the king at various functions.

“Ettofaali is my initiative for the people of Buganda to contribute resources to carry out their responsibility to develop the kingdom.

Next time you are asked about the role of the Katikkiro, do not say its collecting ettofaali,” he emphasised sending students and their teachers into laughter.
Mayiga said he was shocked to learn that 67 per cent of pupils at the school do not speak Luganda.

“Learning a language is a resource, 25 per cent of Ugandans speak Luganda and I advise you to learn Luganda. Next time I come here, I will not speak English but Luganda,” he said. Mayiga is on a two-day tour of Makindye Division in Kampala.

Green Hill Academy Rector Joy Maraka requested the Katikkiro to avail the school with more land to build another school in Buganda.

At Namuwongo and Wabigalo, Mayiga urged the people in Buganda not to give up on demands for more kingdom assets now under government.

“For us to make Buganda get back its former glory, we have to stick to our demands. I would be seated in my comfortable office the king gave me as the Katikkiro but here I am reaching out to you to develop Buganda,” he said. Mayiga told Wabigalo residents to elect candidates who do not belittle the monarchy but respect it.

Earlier, Mayiga visited Police Children School Kibuli Police barracks where he received a total collection of about Shs15 million.
