Katusabe’s family pleads with DPP to exonerate Baguma

KAMPALA
The family of the late Donah Katusabe want Mr Aaron Baguma removed from the list of those charged with the murder of their relative.

This comes moments after Mr Baguma secretly turned himself in to Buganda road court where he was charged and remanded to Kigo prison.

Mr Baguma, the former DPC of Central Police Station in Kampala is accused of failing to save the life of Ms Katusabe when he failed in his capacity to restrain people that beat Katusabe to death for alleged failure to clear a debt on a car she had purchased from pine car bond in Kampala.

In a letter addressed to the Director of Public Prosecution, the family requested that Baguma’s name be spared from the list of nine people charged with the murder of Katusabe.

The family, through Mr Alex Masereka Epafura, who claims to be the heir to Ms Katusabe’s father’s estate, partly states that: “Your Lordship, we request SP Aaron Baguma be dropped from among the accused persons.”

The two page letter signed by Mr Masereka further states that; “From the day we got to know about the death of our sister, it is Aaron Baguma who, as DPC of CPS helped us in uncovering the rot that some other officers in police had done in ensuring that the murderers of our sister walk away scot free.”

The letter that outlines a number of grounds for exonerating the officer also states that Mr Baguma helped the family access the IGP Gen kale Kayihura as they followed the investigations into the death of their loved one.

“It is Baguma who arrested Mr Sebuwufu (one of the suspects) when he had already planned to leave the country…” the letter further states.
When contacted, Mr Masereka confirmed authoring the letter adding that “This is our case, there is no way we can make a wrong decision, along the way we have heard to make very difficult decisions, some things are not the way they look on the surface,” he noted.

Another family member, Mr Moris Kule also confirmed that the decision was not taken by one person but the family as a whole.

“Before you blame family, remember there are many events that have taken place, but for the sake of our comfort as family we couldn’t allow to be swallowed by the confusion in this case, besides the decision taken by family members is strongly agreed upon not by only one but as a team,” Mr Kule said.
