Gen Kale Kayihura.

KASESE.
The Inspector General (IGP) of Police Kale Kayihura yesterday asked for forgiveness from the rowdy boda-boda riders in Kasese town following the death of their colleague who was knocked dead by one of the vehicles in his convoy.

“l am very sorry for the death of your colleague. I will make sure that I take care of his family and go to his home in Kyarumba for burial,” said the IGP who was heavily guarded.
“We have already arrested the driver and he will be charged with causing death by reckless driving. I am rushing to Kampala and I will come back and we talk,” the IGP said.

His intervention followed commotion that erupted in Kasese town along Kilembe road Sunday morning as boda-boda riders pelted stones at police accusing them of killing their colleague.
Police in exchange fired tear gas canisters at the protesting crowd.

Eriya Kule, 32, a resident of Nyondo in Mughete parish Kyarumba sub –county, Kasese district and plied his trade at Kilembe stage near shell petrol station in Kasese town was the victim of the 8:40am accident and died on spot.

As Mr Kule crossed the road heading to Margherita hotel, he was knocked by one of the vehicles in the IGP’s convoy.
According to his colleagues Kule had just come out of prison on defilement charges.

The cyclists attempted to torch one of the vehicles in the IGP’s convoy but were restrained by police. The IGP later returned at the scene under heavy guard to console the boda boda riders.

“Your boys drive recklessly on the road. We request you to arrest yourself and record a statement with your juniors because any slight mistake that we make, we are arrested, charged and made to pay heavily,” the boda-boda riders shouted.

They asked the IGP to answer why he was being driven at high speed and why there was no lead car with a siren to alert other motorist to clear the way for him.

Kayihura is in the district to ensure security ahead of president Museveni’s scheduled visit tomorrow (Tuesday) where they will pass out crime preventers.
