Kayihura warns journalists over defiance reporting

Police chief Gen Kale Kayihura

KAMPALA. As the world marked the International Press Freedom yesterday, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), warned journalists against reporting FDC defiance campaigns.
Gen Kale Kayihura, warned that journalists reporting defiance campaigns that were prohibited by constitutional court will be in contempt of court.
On Friday, Justice Kavuma issued an interim order discontinuing Dr Besigye and his opposition political party FDC from holding planned peaceful demonstrations at Nakivubo Blue primary school on May 5.

The order also comprises stopping the party’s ‘Free My Vote’ Tuesday prayers that have been ongoing for close to two months, as well as prohibiting media houses from broadcasting or publishing any such message of the prayers.
“Defying court orders makes you to be in contempt of court. We therefore caution the electronic and print media covering defiance campaigns to be careful because they could be criminally liable,” Gen Kayihura said yesterday at a press briefing at police headquarters in Naguru.

Meanwhile, Gen Kayihura urged the public to be vigilant, saying there were terror threats ahead of President Yoweri Museveni swearing-in slated for May 12, 2016.
On Monday, Ms Polly Namaye, the Deputy Police spokesperson, said Entebbe International Airport was on the target list by terrorist.
“We call members of the public to be vigilant, and, as usual we count on your cooperation to ensure that forces that plan to undermine the security and stability of our country are defeated,” Gen Kayihura said.
