Kitgum teachers abandon classes for boda boda

Kitgum. The acting Kitgum Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Col Lawrence Asiimwe, has warned teachers in the district to stop riding boda boda and return to class.
Col Asiimwe told Daily Monitor on Friday that several teachers in the district have abandoned teaching and resorted to riding boda bodas yet they are still on the government payroll. Mr Asiimwe added that he cannot sit and look on as learners report to school but there are no teachers to teach them.

He explained that in the past, teachers have complained a lot about poor pay but even when government has increased their salaries, some of them have abandoned their duties.
The RDC appealed to the teachers to exercise professionalism while executing their duties.

In 2016, several teachers in the district started teaching and at the same time riding boda bodas to earn a side income, a move that saw most of the students/pupils not completing their syllabus.
The teachers argued that they had to engage in boda boda business to supplement their salary given the high cost of living. Early this year, Kole RDC Agnes Akello Ebong warned the teachers to choose between riding boda bodas and teaching.
Last month, a teacher at Kyerero Primary School in Rukiga District, was on Monday arrested by police for abandoning his job to join the boda boda business. The teacher is said to have left school about two years ago yet he kept receiving government salary.
