Despite a warning by the Inspector General of Government (IGG) not to sell more university land, authorities at Kyambogo have secretly gone ahead to parcel out 0.173 hectares of the institution’s prime land.

The Daily Monitor has learnt from reliable sources that the investor has already secured a title deed for the piece of land in the names of Albino Ijum. The contested land overlooks the university main entrance and is adjacent the Uganda National Examinations Board printery department.

The developer is reported to have acquired the land in 2010 without the knowledge of the university administration.

However, sources at the university that preferred anonymity to speak freely about the matter, told this newspaper yesterday that some university administrators knew about the deal but concealed the information for ‘individual’s gains’.

A copy of a land title seen by this newspaper indicates that the developer got an initial lease of five years from the Uganda Land Commission which expires on June 30, 2015, but it could be extended for more 49 years.
Despite the fact that the land title is in the names of Ijum, another developer, Petua Kateeba, who claims to be the landlord on July 10 wrote to the University secretary, Mr Sam Akorimo, saying he was in the process of developing the land, starting with fencing it off.

When contacted, Mr Lawrence Madete, the university spokesperson, said they learnt about the illegal transfer of the land and the university council has instructed the legal department to follow up the matter with the Uganda Land Commission.
