At least seven sub-county chairpersons in Adjumani on Wednesday stormed the district headquarters demanding the payment of their salary arrears.
The leaders, who said the arrears date far back as 2011, also complained that they have not received their April salary, accusing the technical officers of not giving them any explanation.
Mr Andrew Amech, one of the leaders, said his colleagues cannot afford paying school fees for their children. “If the central government has failed to pay us, let them permit the sub-counties to pay us from local revenues,” Mr Amech said.
Calm was restored when the district chairperson, Mr Nixon Owole, intervened and invited the technical officers to validate the claims in a meeting also attended by the sub-county leaders in his office.
Mr Simon Watti, the deputy chief administrative officer, acknowledged the problem.
“We are rectifying the anomalies on their files and the problem is associated with the decentralised payment of salary for civil servants,” Mr Watti said.
