KAMPALA. Campaigns for the local council elections have kicked off today in high gear for those who were successfully nominated yesterday.

The candidates are expected to utilise these four days by canvassing for votes from village residents. The campaigns will stop on July 9, 2018.

Mr Jotham Taremwa, the Electoral Commission spokesperson could not establish the number of candidates that had contested from all the villages around the country by press time.

“At least every village in this country presented a candidate, except those not captured in the Electoral Commission’s national data system. However, it is too early for me to confirm the number of candidates that have been nominated,” Mr Taremwa said.

87-year old Erudinasio Kateregga, one of the contestants in Kireka Bira, Bulenga Sub County in Wakiso District said he was ready for the race because he has seen it all and he is the only one capable to lead the village.

“I have been LC1 since they started in 1987 as RC and even when it was changed to LC in 1995. I have the experience and I know I can make the best chairman in my village. I have started my campaigns and I am visiting everyone because I know all of them by name and face,” Mr Kateregga said.

Concerns of the eliminated villages arose as Ms Jennifer Namuyangu, the State Minister for Local Government on Thursday said a total of 3,821 villages will miss the Local Council elections, because they are not captured in the Electoral Commission’s national data system.

Mr Taremwa said that Shs15b had been allocated for both Women Councils and LCI elections in the 60800 villages countrywide.

“This excluded the newly created villages. If they have to conduct any other elections, another budget has to be made.”

Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Information Communication Technology and National Guidance, Catherine Musingwiire in a press release said the LC1 polling day would be declared a public holiday.

“It has been confirmed that July 10 is a public holiday so that all Ugandans are able to participate in the forthcoming LC1 elections effectively,” reads the statement in part.
