Landslides damage Kabale-Katuna road

Landslides have destroyed part of Kabale-Katuna road at Kyonyo in Katuna Town Council in Kabale District prompting police to issue a warning to road users. The road developed heavy cracks on Saturday at 1am following a heavy down pour.

A tweet from Uganda Police Force, shows that police have put up warning signs to direct light traffic to the newly completed Ntungamo-Mirama Hills road to connect to Rwanda.

Patience Tusiime, a resident of Kanyanjonka Village Kacereere Ward Katuna Town Council, says the landslides were triggered by heavy rains that started on Thursday night. She says the landslides also buried four houses in the areas.

Andrew Muyambi, the Officer in Charge of Traffic at Kabale Central Police Station, says he had deployed traffic officers at Katuna border and Kitumba to alert vehicles to use alternative routes. On May 13, 2018, similar landslides destroyed Gatuna-Gicumbi-Kigali road at Cyumba Sector in Gicumbi District.

Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) executive director, Ms Allen Kagina who visited the scene on Saturday said they were doing everything possible to repair the road.
“There are a lot of heavy rains and the network is experiencing some challenges. My intervention is not a small one. We might have to bring in a contractor. We have an alternative road through Ntungamo-Mirama Hills. In the meantime, we don’t want motorist traffic on this road,” she said.
