Lira. Inmates from 13 prisons in Lango and Acholi sub-regions are undergoing life and entrepreneurship skills development training so that they can become better citizens after completing their sentences.
The three-week course is in response to increasing lack of alternative sources of livelihood by youth in the region.
It is being implemented by the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) in partnership with Advance Afrika, a non-profit organisation with support from Caritas Switzerland.
Mr Adams Hasiyo, UPS’s senior welfare and rehabilitation officer, last week said after the training, those who would be released from prisons will be supported with start-up kits to enable them engage in small enterprises.
He said re-entering society after long-term imprisonment comes with many challenges such as barriers to receiving public benefits, gaining successful employment, regaining custody of children and obtaining housing.
