LoP  Wafula Oguttu trails as  Minister Alupo loses in Katakwi

 According to partial results released by the Bugiri District Returning Officer early on Friday afternoon amid pressure from anxious voters who were threatening to run riot, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Mr Phillip Wafula Oguttu was trailing the NRM flagbearer, Mr Solomon Silwanyi by more than 5000 votes in Bukooli Central constituency.

With results from 138 out of the constituency’s 183 polling stations in, Mr Wafula Oguttu, had 15,391 votes while Mr Silwanyi had garnered 21,195 votes.

Mr Mulengani Luwanga, the third candidate in the race for the constituency which has 88,227 registered voters had by press time garnered 10,568 votes.

 In Katakwi District, Hon Jessica Alupo, the minister for education and sports has lost the district woman MP seat to the NRM flag bearer.

Ms Violet Adome Akurut beat Jessica Alupo who had served for two terms with 26,091 votes.

Ms Alupo was defeated in the NRM primaries and decided to contest as an independent.

Ms Alupo got 20,720 in the race that attracted five candidates.

Others who participated the race were Ms Stella Jane Aguti who polled 2,181, Ms Cecilia Anyakoit 2,346 votes, and Ms Evelyn Igela 1,488 votes.

Ms Akurut was declared winner by Daniel Otheino, the returning officer for Katakwi District.

Upon being declared winner, the jubilant Ms Akurut called for unity from supporters of her Ms  Alupo.

“We are one, we need a united Katakwi,” she appealed.

Attempts to get a comment from Ms Alupo were futile as her known number remained switched off.
