Kampala city lord mayor Erias Lukwago Tuesday visited Wandegeya where a building collapsed, killing three people and injuring scores.
Shortly after inspecting the rubbles where some people are believed to be still trapped, Lukwago attributed the accident to negligence.

“In my observation, this is not an accident. It is something that happened out of sheer negligence.
This structure has been here for a very long time and it’s among those that were supposed to be erased because it is in the road reserve. It is a very unfortunate occurrence. I want to commiserate with the victims of the incident. I express my deepest sympathies to the deceased’s families,” he said.
Lukwago arrived just a few minutes after the departure of Kamapala Capital City Authority (KCCA) executive director Jennifer Musisi.

Mr Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, on Monday said investigations to establish the cause of the accident were underway.
“True, a building on Makerere Hill Road collapsed in the afternoon killing one person on spot. We have rushed five others to Mulago Hospital but in critical condition,” Mr Onyango Monday told Daily Monitor on phone.
Unofficial reports, however, suggested four bodies had been retrieved from the rubbles.

“We cannot confirm the number of the dead now because the search is still underway. We cannot also tell whether the victims were Makerere University students or not. An official report will be availed by tomorrow (today),” Mr Onyango said.
Nearby residents, however, said the building had developed huge cracks several months ago and that the matter had been brought to the attention of the management.
In December last year, two buildings collapsed at Kansanga in Makindye Division and Lungujja in Rubaga Division, killing eight people and injuring scores.
