A UPDF soldier, who was jailed for 30 years over last year’s shooting in Luzira in which three people were killed and one injured, has appealed to the General Court Martial.

Corporal Herbert Rwakihembo has filed a notice of appeal before the court.
Court records show that on December 10, 2012, at Kisenyi Zone 3, Luzira in Nakawa Division, Cpl. Rwakihembo caused the death of Irene Namuyaba Nakibirango, Zaina Nassolo Nalongo and Loyce Kawendeke using a sub machine gun.

Cpl. Rwakihembo, 31, a soldier attached to Luzira Prison Military Detach, was charged with murder but court reduced it to manslaughter.

After the January 8 judgment, Mr Martin Muhumuza, who represented the soldier, described the punishment as harsh and indicated the possibility of appealing to a higher court. “The judgment was fair but the sentence is too harsh for my client.”
