KAMPALA. After spending the past two weeks in Luzira civil prison over failure to clear a Shs100m debt, Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa was on Monday freed.

The legislator was released after negotiating an agreement that saw him make a cash down payment of Shs15m to his judgment creditor, Mr John Baptist Maali.
He also promised to clear the remaining balance at a date not later than August 2 of this year.
Mr Munyagwa was on April 10 of this month arrested by court bailiffs and taken to Executions Division of the High Court after failing to honor his promises to clear Mr Maali's debt.
He was accordingly sent to civil prison at Luzira where he was expected to spend six months as a punishment.

Monday’s payment schedule agreement between MP Munyagwa and Mr Maali was signed off by Justice Flavia Anglin.
The law maker's troubles begun in 2015 when he allegedly sold a piece of land to Mr Maali but did not hand him the vacate possession of the said land.

Mr Munyagwa in the alternative did not refund Mr Maali his money after failing to hand him the land in question.
Court documents show that Mr Munyagwa through his agent Meddie Basajja had approached Mr Maali and told him about the intentions of selling his 0.316 hectares of land located at Kyadondo Block 205, Plot 509 at Kawempe.

It's further alleged that the law maker assured Mr Maali that the land in question was his and that he had bought it from Mr Sentongo Bakali.
In the process, the MP asked Mr Maali to be patient as he was processing it's land title from Kamapala District Land board.
To that effect, Mr Maali paid him Shs100m after the MP promised to vacate the land but in vain.
This prompted Mr Maali to institute a law suit against the MP leading to his arrest and imprisonment for the past two weeks.
