ARUA. An East African Legislative Assembly Member of Parliament, Ms Nusura Tiperu, on Thursday escaped being lynched by a mob in Pajulu Sub-county, Arua District.
Ms Tiperu was part of a team from the Ministry of Local Government together with the Permanent Secretary, Mr Patrick Mutabirwe, which is in the district to consult the community on proposals to elevate Arua to a city status.

Asked to leave
Ms Tiperu had arrived early at the venue in Pajulu but decided to go to a nearby primary school to chat with pupils as the participants had not yet fully gathered.
Police said as she was still in the school, a mob approached and asked the sub-county chief to alert her that she should leave immediately. The mob armed with sticks and clubs, surrounded her vehicle but her driver sped off to Arua Police Station.

The district police commander, Mr Jonathan Musinguzi, said Ms Tiperu then reported a case of threatening violence. “She has reported a case of threatening violence so we are going to investigate, she told us that her life was in danger but she had not notified us of her presence in the district,” said Mr Musinguzi.
Ms Tiperu declined to comment after recording a statement at the police.

Why the lynching?
Sources who declined to be named said they wanted to attack her over having an interest in the demarcation of constituencies where they said she misinformed the President about the May district resolution, which re-demarcated Oli Division.
Mr Mutabirwe is currently in Arua District seeking consensus among communities which agreed to form part of greater Arua in the town’s quest to attain a city status.
