MP arrested over Busoga killings

Police has arrested Bukooli South MP Mr Steven Dede on accusation that he participated in several murders that have hit Busoga and the eastern district over time.

Mr Dede’s arrest was announced on Friday by Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura at a press conference at Nalufenya Police Station in Jinja district.

He said Mr Dede was jointly arrested with Namayingo Town Council Chairman Mr Daniel Wanyama in connection with the same offences. He said the suspects who were detained at Nalufenya Police Station are part of the 18 suspects already arrested in connection with the murders that have occurred in in eastern Uganda since 2012. He said 26 suspects are destined for arrest.

Kayihura told the press that the suspects were also involved in theft of guns and money from business people in the eastern region for a long time.Gen Kayihura said police recovered seven guns and 105 bullets during the operation in the last two months following escalation of murders in the region.

He cited the murder of Shi‘ite Muslim leader Dr Abdulakadiri Muwaya on 25 December 2014 in Mayuge district, Buyinja sub-county Chairman David Tito Okware on 2 February 2015 in Namayingo district, two Sheikhs, two police officers and a businessman in Bugiri district, a security guard in Mayuge and a policeman in Namayingo.

“We have discovered that the killings these suspects have been conducting were not in isolation but in connection with terrorist groups in particular the Allied Democratic Forces,” Gen Kaihura said before the press.
He said the suspects would be produced to court any time.

He commended the population for providing information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
