MPs ‘consuming’ each other, says Miria Matembe

Civil rights activist and rabble-rouser Maria Matembe was at Parliament last weekend, this time to talk about morality.

“MPs are consuming each other,” she told journalists. “Their marriages are falling apart and they need help.” “When I was an MP, I had a list of names detailing who was sleeping with who in Parliament,” she said eliciting bouts of laughter from scribes.

“I stood on the floor and I wanted to name them but then MPs started distracting me with points of order and shouting me down. I was going to name them,” said Ms Matembe a former member of Pan-African Parliament from Uganda.

She also said the naming was nipped in the bud when the (then) Speaker, Mr Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi (now Vice President), said the matter should be dropped and handled another time.

“That time never came. But we need to help these MPs. You hear them being broke but it’s because their families are in trouble. We should name them,” she said.
