Mafabi camp files petition, vows to boycott get-together

KAMPALA

Supporters of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Mr Nandala Mafabi, who lost the FDC party presidency, yesterday handed a petition to the FDC national chairperson, Mr Sam Njuba, about their grievances arising from the party’s presidential election and vowed to boycott the planned reconciliation get-together.

The spokesperson for the Mafabi campaign team, Ms Sarah Eperu, who met with Mr Njuba on Kampala Road in Kampala yesterday afternoon to hand over the eight-page petition, said they would not attend the party at the chairperson’s home at Kasangati in Wakiso District because their grievances had not been resolved.

Mr Mafabi, was defeated by Maj.Gen. (rtd) Mugisha Muntu in the November 22 poll. Since then, there has been tension in the party, with the Mafabi team demanding the resignation of electoral commission chairperson Dan Mugarura and secretary-general Alice Alaso over their conduct during the ballot.

Ms Eperu said: “Had it been any other meeting, we would have attended. I think it is funny that they are organising a party without ironing out outstanding issues because our team is dissatisfied with what came out of the elections.”

In the petition, a copy of which the Daily Monitor has seen, the Mafabi camp demands that Gen. Muntu publicly apologise to Mr Mafabi for alleged derogatory remarks.
That the nine issues raised in the petition be heard by a truth and reconciliation committee, Ms Alaso, and Mr Mugarura, step down to allow a thorough investigation into the elections and another member, Ms Anita Among, appear before a disciplinary committee for her behaviour during the election. But as he received the petition, Mr Njuba said he would only read it after the reconciliation party.

“After the elections, we held a meeting where the aggrieved party was advised to either go to court or file a petition. However, I got the petition a few hours before the reconciliatory party. I could not call off the party as people had travelled from across the country to attend. So it will have to wait.”
