Supporters of Mr Nandala Mafabi, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament (LOP), have made a U-turn and promised to support the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party president as a New Year resolution.

Mr Mafabi’s supporters last year threatened to leave FDC if he is dropped from the position of LOP, but while meeting their leader at Nalusala Sub-county at the weekend, they vowed to support the FDC party president, Maj Gen (rtd) Mugisha Muntu, until his term expires.

While addressing the supporters, Sironko District FDC party chairman Polly Mugoya said as a party they resolved that Mr Mafabi would not contest against Maj Gen Mugisha and that all FDC supporters in Sironko would canvass votes for the party president.

Mr Mafabi addressed his supporters who, hitherto, had threatened to quit the party. They had also advised him to start his own party.

Maj Gen Muntu defeated Mr Mafabi by 32 votes in the November 2012 race to replace Dr Kizza Besigye, who chose to retire. However, Mr Mafabi cried foul, accusing top party officials, especially Secretary-General Alice Alaso of abusing her position to influence results against him.
