Mak probes forgery of students’ results

Kampala. The management of Makerere University has said it will investigate students’ marks alteration scandal at all its nine colleges.
Speaking to journalists yesterday after a press conference on the university retirement benefit scheme, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, said they had previously suspended lecturers who were involved in the scandal but those [recently sacked] were dismissed because their plea was not convincing.
“We are trying to fix the loopholes in all our systems. We started last year and the committee that was instituted to investigate marks alteration discovered that the names of some students who had dropped out of the university were on the graduation list were put by those staff who were dismissed,” he said.
“This has been an eye opener to us and we are going to go to every college, check people working there and all the systems to make sure this problem does not happen in Makerere,” the Vice Chancellor added.

Top officials dismissed
The probe follows the dismissal of two university staff from the School of Health Sciences.
The college’s deputy registrar, Ms Fatuma Nakatudde and the senior administrative assistant, Mr Paul Apunyo, were last week dismissed for altering marks and smuggling unqualified students onto the 2017 graduation list.
The university also demoted the school’s dean, Dr Rose Kyalo Nabirye, and Dr Isaac Okullo, the deputy principal, over failure to prevent the fraud.
The decision to probe the university colleges comes less than three months to the university’s 69th graduation ceremony scheduled for January next year.
