Makerere University cut-off points on private admission have gone up after students posted better results in last year’s Senior Six national examinations.

Mr Charles Sentongo, the academic registrar, yesterday said it has been very competitive for students wishing to join their institution following an improved performance in Senior Six results. The 2013/14 academic year starts on August 17. “The students performed better than the previous year forcing us to raise the cutoff points,” he said.

For instance, Bachelor of Dental Surgery has gone up from last year’s 45.7 to 48.1 points while Bachelor of Science in civil engineering was 47 but students will now need 1.8 more points to join the university. However, Bachelor of Accounting registered a decline from 41.4 to 39.8 this year.

Uganda National Examinations Board reported an improved performance in 2012 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education with girls posting better results.

A total of 99.3 per cent candidates qualified for the award of UACE compared to 99.2 per cent who passed in 2011. This means 76, 158 candidates are expected to access institutions of higher learning this year compared to 64, 417 who sat in 2011.

According to Mr Mathew Bukenya, the Uneb executive secretary, performance improved at the two principal level, which is the minimum pass level, considered for admission to tertiary institutions. Overall performance was better than that of 2011; 69.4 per cent compared to 64 per cent in 2011.
