Makerere University students were on Monday engaged in running battles with police on the university campus.
Police fired teargas and live bullets to disperse the students who were attempting to stage protests.

The students are protesting new policies that were recently introduced by the university administration.

The new policies described by students as unfair include increased tuition, the scrapping of meals from halls of residence, replacement of government sponsorship with a loan scheme and the removal of evening lectures in some colleges.
