What you need to know:

The move, according to council chairman, is intended to find out the unit cost of every course.

KAMPALA- Makerere University will review its courses in order to concentrate on those that are cost effective and market oriented, according to the institution’s chairperson.

Dr Charles Wana-Etyem, the University Council chairperson, told Daily Monitor in an interview that the university council had acknowledged the President’s advice and started working to review its programmes.

This follows President Museveni’s meeting with Makerere University officials last month where he asked them to suspend the 10 per cent fees increment and promised to raise their pay, but gave them a condition to revisit their programmes to remove courses considered redundant.

“President Museveni said we evaluate our programmes and drop courses that are not cost effective. The university has embarked on reviewing its structures and programmes which have a relationship to staff deployment,” Dr Etyem said.

“All this is aimed at establishing the unit cost of programmes which will guide both government and universities in planning,” he added.
