A 55-year-old man, who was wounded during a patriotism training, has accused the Iganga District chairperson, Mr Shaban Nkuutu, of taking Shs1 million of the Shs3 million President Museveni contributed towards his treatment.

Mr Emmanuel Munyirwa and 15-year-old Hairat Namudiba, both residents of Nabukone and Nabikote villages, respectively, were hit by stray bullets during the training on January 27 this year, The training was conducted by the President’s office through Iganga Resident District Commissioner (RDC).

The trainees underwent shooting and gun handling drills under the supervision of army instructors.

Ms Namudiba was injured in the abdomen while Mr Munyirwa suffered injuries on his right arm and shoulder.

On February 1, while presiding over the pass out of the trainees, President Museveni offered each of the victims Shs3 million for treatment. Ms Namudiba’s parents were present to receive the money, but Mr Munyirwa’s relatives were absent and Mr Museveni gave his money to Mr Nkuutu to pass it over to him.

Mr Munyirwa claims he only received Shs2 million and has since petitioned the President through the RDC’s office.

“Your Excellency sir, I was told that you sent me Shs3 million through the district chairman when I was at Mulago hospital, but I am sorry to inform you that the chairperson delivered only Shs2 million to me,” Mr Munyirwa wrote in his petition to Mr Museveni on February 24.

Iganga RDC Ramathan Walugembe confirmed receipt of Mr Munyirwa’s petition and said he had submitted it to the President’s office.

Mr Nkuutu declined to say whether he took the money but counter-accused Mr Munyirwa of play acting. “Those people are into some kind of drama, but I request you to leave the story. I am in a meeting right now, but we shall talk,” he said and hang up.
