Police in Apac District are holding a man over allegations that he killed his brother for stealing maize from his garden.

The 48-year-old suspect currently detained at Apac Central Police Station allegedly beat his younger brother, Bosco Opio, 22, to death on Friday after he found him roasting a cob of maize he had allegedly plucked from his (the suspect) garden.

After his brother’s death, the suspect reportedly fled their home as angry residents attempted to lynch him. However, he was traced by police and arrested on Sunday.

The officer in charge of Criminal Investigation Department of Apac, Ms Pamela Aguti, on Monday confirmed the suspect was in their custody, adding that he would be charged with murder.

“It is very unfortunate that a person can decide to kill his own brother just over a piece of maize. This is so primitive and I think people need to change and value life. How can someone take away the life of another person in this way?” Ms Aguti wondered.

She said the suspect will be produced in court soon since the case file has already been sanctioned by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
