Man remanded for conning 70 Ugandans over Shs200m in fake jobs scam

Court in Kampala has remanded to Luzira Prison the proprietor of Miracle Recruitment Services International Limited, an employment recruitment agency for allegedly conning 70 Ugandans over Shs212 million promising to get them jobs abroad.
Prosecution told Law Development Centre (LDC) Court on Thursday that Evaristo Ayebazibwe started a ‘fake’ unregistered company to fleece unsuspecting Ugandans of their money on promise that he would secure for them jobs abroad.

His arrest came after 70 reports of obtaining money by false pretence were registered at Old Kampala Police Station under vide CRB.628/2018.

He was first charged on July 6, 2018 with 25 counts, convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment. However, his case file was on Thursday amended to a total of 70 counts.
He allegedly conned his unsuspecting clients promising to help them acquire jobs abroad.

Several of his victims told court that standard charges had been set by the suspect where Ugandan foreign workers were expected to pay Shs10 million if they wanted to work in Canada, Shs 4.5m in Qatar, Shs5m in Dubai, Sharjah or United Arab Emirates.

Ayebazibwe was charged of obtaining money by false pretence contrary to section 305 of the Penal Code Act and operating a recruitment agency without a license contrary to section 38(1) of the Employment Act of 2006, Regulation of 4 & 85(a) of Employment (Recruitment of Uganda Migrant Workers Abroad) Regulations 2005.

The investigating officer, however, told the presiding magistrate that several complainants have come forward and that the police are taking their statements with the intention of laying additional charges.
