Man sentenced to 2-years over illegal possession of firearm

ENTEBBE: Court in Entebbe has sentenced a 22-year-old man to two years and four months in prison over illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Jude Savado a resident of Kitala zone along Entebbe Road was convicted by the presiding Chief Magistrate Mary Kaitesi on his own plea of guilty to the charges read to him.
“You are a first time offender and haven’t wasted courts time. You are therefore sentenced to two years for possessing a firearm without holding a valid firearm certificate contrary to section 3(2) (a) of the fire arm Act. On the second charge of possession of ammunition, you are sentenced to four months” she said.

Kaitesi further stated that both sentences will be served concurrently by the convict.
Court heard that on May 12 this year, Savado at Karindu zone, Munyonyo a Kampala Suburb when driving was stopped and searched by AIP Chris Ahimbisibwe of the police Flying squad and was found with a Pistol TAP 6059 belonging to UPDF and 10 rounds of ammunition.
Upon interrogation by police Savado admitted to being in possession of the firearm but only for a friend (UPDF officer) who was his neighbour claiming that he had forgotten it in his car after a night out drinking together.
