Man commits suicide after losing Shs50m in betting

A 23-year-old Indian national hanged himself in a hotel room in Mubende Town after he lost company money on bad bets.

The deceased identified by police as Devana Gireesh, a salesman of Navis Distillers Company located in Kawempe, a Kampala suburb, lost Shs50m in betting before he took his life.

His body, according to detectives attached to Mubende Central Police Station, was discovered by one of the room attendants at Travellers Hotel in Mubende town on Friday. They suspect the man could have hanged himself at around mid-night.

The management of Travellers Hotel reported the incident at Mubende Central Police Station which immediately dispatched a team of investigators to establish the cause of Gireesh death.

Risking the company money
The deceased, according to eyewitnesses who did not want to be named, was on a business trip when he decided to risk the company money he had collected from the supply of spirits.

“The deceased hanged self in Travellers Hotel Room No. 306 using a bed sheet” said Mr Nobert Ochom, the Wamala regional police spokesperson.
“He left behind a note written in Indian and upon interpretation, he claimed he had company money amounting to Shs50 million and had accumulated hotel bills,” Mr Ochom said.
He allegedly lost the money through sports betting ventures.
Police visited the scene and took the body to the city mortuary pending a postmortem.

After a postmortem, the body will be handed over to the relatives for burial arrangements.
Police has opened an inquiry file into the man’s death.
