Pregnant woman killed two months after surviving an attack by unknown assailants

Police in Gomba District are investigating circumstances under which a 19-year-old pregnant woman was killed at Bukandula village, Kabulasoke Sub-County.
Sheikh Musa Kayongo, the village chairman identified the deceased as Amina Nabukeera, the daughter of Mr Abdu Yiga, the chairperson of Ssaali village in Bukandula parish.
Sheikh Kayongo said she was eight months pregnant.

According to the chairman, Nabukeera was attacked and killed near Bukandula Church of Uganda Primary School, about one kilometre away from their home.
She had reportedly been married for about a year.
“I and my wife were heading to the trading centre at about 8pm to buy some household items when she was attacked. I was moving ahead of her when I heard a scuffle behind me. On turning my head, I saw the assailant hitting my wife with a hammer on the head, cut off her right ear and the jaw with a panga before running away. I was too frightened and helpless to fight for my wife,” Mr Arafat Kabuubi, the deceased’s husband told this reporter.

“I made an alarm to alert residents but it was too late to save her. She died as we were trying to get a motorcycle to rush her to the nearest health centre,” he added.
Mr Joseph Katabalwa, a resident said this was the second time Nabukeera was being attacked this year.

“In March this year, the attacker hit her an object on the head but fortunately, she survived after getting treatment in a private clinic in the area. She was attacked in the toilet but God was on her side, she did not die,” Mr Katabalwa said.
Mr Abdu Kyabangi, former Gomba District chairperson and a resident in Nabukeera’s village tasked police to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring the culprits to book.

“We are living in fear. We don’t know who the murderers are but I think police should start patrolling the villages instead of sitting in their offices. Let them be in the field every time and making day and night patrols. I wonder why there are many gamblers, drunkards in the village yet they are not arrested. These are the criminals!” Mr Kyabangi said.
A resident who preferred not to be named in this story for fear of retribution said there have been long-standing disagreements between Nabukeera and her ex-boyfriend (name withheld) because she refused to marry him and instead went with another man.

However, Mr Joseph Musana, police publicist in Katonga region said: “Let our people be calm because we are handling the situation. We are investigating the matter and the culprit shall be apprehended soon.”
Nabukeera’s body was taken to Gomba Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
