KAMPALA.

Democratic Party president Norbert Mao has for the first time talked about his health since he was discharged from hospital three days ago.

In a message to Old Boys of Namilyango College, Mr Mao assured his former schoolmates that he is getting better.

“I am able to walk and stand and take a shower,” the DP president wrote.
Mr Mao, who was admitted to International Hospital Kampala on May 12, was discharged on Wednesday. Ever since he was admitted, the former Gulu District chairman could not be reached and news about his health has been coming in through the party spokesperson, Mr Kenneth Kakande, and Mr Mao’s brother Dusman Okee.

Over the last few weeks, there has been speculation on Mao’s recovery. Reports came in saying Mr Mao had slipped into a coma.

Regarding the speculation about slipping into a coma, Mao wrote: “Even me I got the news. I want to assure you there is no network the other side of the grave. Don’t forget that the metal that gets the most hammering is the special one. I believe that God wants me in a particular shape to do His work. The hammer of God will continue to bang me until I am in the right shape.”

Early this year, Mr Mao took leave from the party leadership citing poor health. He told his Old Boys that he takes responsibility for his actions.

“Even though I announced leave, I continue working as if it were normal working days. I was foolish. I do not blame anyone but myself. I believe in taking responsibility in my actions,” Mr Mao wrote.

In a telephone interview with the Daily Monitor this week, Mr Kakande said Mao was still recuperating at his home in Kampala and would be back to party duties soon.

“What I can assure you is that healthwise, Mr Mao is doing very well. He just needs to regain his energy like any person who has just left hospital should be, Mr Kakande said.
