Masaka hospital gets a 400 bed-capacity ward

KAMPALA- The government has commenced the construction of a 400 bed-capacity ward to house children and expectant mothers at Masaka Regionsl Referral Hospital.
Ms Florence Tugumisirize, the hospital director, said the facility built in 1929 as a clinic for syphilis patients, had been weakened by old age.
“On a daily basis, we receive more than 2,000. Out of these more than 300 are admitted. We sometimes get overwhelmed and patients are kept in corridors and trees due to lack of space. We need this renovation and expansion like yesterday,” she said.
The hospital has a catchment area of more than two million people covering eight districts in central region. Speaking at the site handover on Tuesday in Masaka Town to Tirupati Development (U) Limited Ms Tugumisirize said the initiative would create more space for both patients and staff.
Mr Miraj Barot, the Tirupati Development joint managing director, said the five-floor building is expected to be completed in two years [2016].

He said the government was finalising plans to construct accommodation facilities for staff.
Mr Joel Aita, the Joadah Consult chief executive officer – site supervisor, said he would ensure that all the works are done in accordance with approved standards.
