Massive power blackout again as Umeme investigates cause

This is the second time in less a month that the country is being left in massive blackout. In December last year, most parts of the country were plunged into darkness with Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited saying it was an internal problem from one of the electricity generation facilities.Most parts of the country have been left in power blackout.
Uganda power distributor Umeme Limited said in a tweet on Tuesday that their team was working with electricity supplier Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) to establish the cause of the blackout that has affected most parts of the country.

“We are aware of the wide area outage affecting many areas. Our teams are currently working with UETCL to establish the cause, resolve it and restore supply as soon possible,” read the tweet by Umeme.

Eralier in the day, the power distributor had said Kajjansi - Nakigalala line in Kampala was facing a burning transformer.
“This affects supply in Kawoto, Kajjansi Roses, Kiwamirembe shrine, Kajjansi Fisheries, Areas around Uganda Clays play ground,” a statement posted on their Twitter said.

This was just hours after the power distributor said in the morning that Itendero, Migina, Mbagwa, Ngoma, Kabwohe, Nganwa, Kigarama and Masheruka were under maintenance.
Others included Katwe, Kishabya, Karera, Kibingo, Rwebikona, Kakyeka, Ruharo, Spencon Water Treatment Plant, NARO,I sanyu, Itendero, Migina, Mbagwa,Nganwa, Kigarama and Asheruka, among others.

However, Mr Simon Kasyate, the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL)'s corporate affairs manager told this reporter that: "Because of the interconnection with the Kenyan grid, when the problem happened in Kenya, Uganda had to be affected."
"We have disconnected Uganda from the Kenyan grid so as to connect Uganda independently and as I talk to you now, power is already restored in some parts of the country," Mr Kasyate said, adding that other parts should expect power back within the shortest time possible.
