KAMPALA.

Organising sports events for noble causes is a method that has worked in Uganda for a number of years of now.
Following yesterday’s fifth edition of the Centenary Bank-sponsored Rotary Cancer Run, that trend seems set to continue.

Under perfect weather conditions, thousands of people yet again thronged Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for what has now become an annual run initiated by the Rotary fraternity to fight the scourge that is cancer.
Prince David Wasajja flagged off the participants that were grouped in the 21km, 10km and 5km categories.

“It is good to see such initiatives from the public growing every year other than always asking for government help,” Chief of Defense Forces, Gen Edward Katumba Wamala commented after taking part.
While there were no official figures by press time, this year’s attendance looked to have surpassed the target of 20,000 participants set by organisers.

The event for the first time also witnessed similar runs in other districts including Arua, Mbarara, Masaka, Kyenjojo, Masindi, Gulu, Entebbe, Bushenyi, and Jinja, among others.

The Run was expected to raise at least Shs500 million to equip the Rotary-Centenary Bank Cancer Ward at Nsambya Hospital with a Linear Accelerator. The machine alone costs about $4 million.
