Mayuge holds second Women’s Day function

District Woman MP and LC5 chairperson pull strings on which celebrations are legitimate.

Whereas in other districts it was difficult organising the International Women’s Day celebrations, in Mayuge District, they can afford an extra one in a space of two months.

This was seen last Friday when the State Minister for Gender, Ms Rukia Isanga Nakadama, who is also the Woman MP for Mayuge, held celebrations to mark the Women’s Day even after another celebration had been held in April. It is said the minister did not attend the first celebrations at Lugolore Primary School which were presided over by the district chairman, Mr Omar Bongo.

In the run-up to last Friday’s function, which was held at Wabulungu Primary School and presided over by the Minister for Tourism, Ms Maria Mutagamba, Ms Nakadama and Mr Bongo reportedly threw barbs at each other over which function was genuine.

While the minister declared that the April celebrations were null and void because she was never invited in her capacity as Woman MP, Mr Bongo went on a local FM radio, urging people not to turn up for the minister’s function on grounds that the day had already been commemorated. “I am not aware of what they are organising. We already celebrated Women’s Day in April and so people should not waste their time going there,” said the chairman in an announcement on a local radio.

On Friday, the minister hit back at those who had tried to block the function, saying they were fighting development in the area. Ms Mutagamba urged residents to check the reported female genital mutilation in Kigandalo Sub-county. Women’s Day falls on March 8.
