Kanungu leaders have resolved to petition President Museveni over what they termed as ‘humiliation’ subjected to their elder, Mr Amama Mbabazi, who was sacked as prime minister recently.
The district council resolved last Friday to convene a consultative meeting attended by district councillors, sub-county chairpersons, opinion leaders, elders, religious leaders, MPs and heads of departments of government on October 15 to discuss their next move.
The leaders said Mr Mbabazi, who is also the NRM secretary general and long-time confidant of President Museveni, had been humiliated, causing worry that he could soon be arrested.
“September has been a month of tears for Kanungu. Mr Mbabazi has been disgracefully dropped from Cabinet. He is being treated like a chicken thief as if he had carried out a coup,” said Kanungu District speaker Charles Beshetsya.
According to the speaker, Mr Museveni had in 2012, during the commissioning of Ishasha Power Dam, praised Mr Mbabazi as one of NRM’s best performers. However, they are wondering about the turn of events and when the President realised that Mr Mbabazi was a bad man.
Arresting Mbabazi
“In fact they say they want to arrest him. Let them arrest him but they should also know that everything bad or good has an end,” Mr Beshetsya said. “People of Kanungu can’t forget the fact that Mr Mbabazi initiated creation of Kanungu District, he has been responsible for the political stability and social cohesion here where NRM government has been getting 99.9 per cent,” said councillor James Kaberuka.
In 1996, Mr Mbabazi, the Kinkinzi West MP, led a delegation of leaders and elders from Kinkizi County that met the President to ask to be separated from Rukungiri District. Kanungu was created in 2001.
Mr Frank Byaruhanga, a district councillor, said with Mr Mbabazi now out of Cabinet and many pending presidential and government pledges, Kanungu was going to be like it is not part of Uganda.
