Mbarara varsity student drowns during study tour

A businessman has been detained at Lugazi Police Station after a university student died at his farm at Senyi in SSi-Bukunja Sub-county in Buikwe District, where he had gone for a study tour.

Shafiq Mulumba, 22, a third year student of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, died on Monday. He was a pursuing a course in urban planning.

According to Sezibwa region police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, the student with other four people whose identities are still unknown because they fled after the incident, went to the farm at Senyi village, for a study tour where Mulumba reportedly drowned.

“We have arrested the director of the farm to help us find out how this person died. Since he is the owner of the farm, we expect him to be knowing what exactly happened and also tell us who the other four people are,” said Mr Kigozi.

He said the student’s body was retrieved and taken to Kawolo hospital for postmortem examination.
