Medics discharge patients, abandon Tororo hospital

By Paul Gonza

Medical workers at Tororo Hospital have gone on strike following the end of a 14-day ultimatum that they had given the government to pay their three-month salary arrears. The workers, it is said, discharged all patients before they abandoned the hospital premises. The strike comes after workers authored a memo dated February 19, 2014 demanding for their unpaid salaries running from December 2013 to-date.

The memo was presented to the Minister of Health for Primary Healthcare, Ms Sarah Achieng Opendi and the Parliamentary Forum on Women Affairs.

However, Ms Opendi had then promised them that the government would soon look into the matter and clear their salaries. The memo stressed that workers would lay down their tools should the government fail to pay them on the due date.

When the Daily Monitor visited the hospital, which accommodates more than 1,000 patients yesterday, there were only eight patients in the female ward and two in the male’s ward.
