Minister applauds Monitor’s Stay in Your Lane campaign

KAMPALA. The State minister for Transport, Mr Aggrey Bagiire, has applauded the Daily Monitor Stay in Your Lane campaign for instilling discipline among motorists.
He made the remarks yesterday at the National Road Safety Summit in Uganda that was organised by Vivo Energy, NTV Uganda and the Ministry of Works and Transport at Kampala Serena Hotel.

The minister referred to an incident in May when his official vehicle was photographed by Daily Monitor for overtaking in a wrong spot.
“At times, naming and shaming of errant road users is going to help people to behave on the road. Together with other behavioural measures such as law enforcement, education and training, there is no reason why we cannot achieve road safety,” he said.

Mr Bagiire also used the summit to direct the police traffic directorate to arrest all those government officials who drive on shoulders (emergency stopping lane) under the disguise of being very important persons.
The summit was aimed at bringing policy makers and other stakeholders up to speed about road safety challenges facing the country in order to increase their commitment towards road safety.

The General Manager NTV Uganda, Mr Johnson Omollo, said: “With such initiatives and collaborations between public and private sector players, we can save lives of innocent citizens from road carnage.”
Mr Gilbert Assi, the managing director of Vivo Energy Uganda, said: “As Vivo energy, we have mainly focused on road safety awareness among road users to positively impact their attitude and behaviour on the road.”
Daily Monitor’s Stay in Your Lane campaign, which started March and took a break last month, returns in September.
