Elections for a new board of directors for Sebei Elgon Cooperative Union (SECU) have been scheduled for June 5, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Co-operatives, has said.
In a May 9 letter addressed to the manager of SECU, the acting Commissioner for Cooperative Development and also Registrar of Cooperatives, Mr Joseph William Kitandwe, said the Special General Meeting for all paid up member societies would be held in Kapchorwa.
A letter inviting members for the meeting indicates that the agenda will handle issues raised by a group of petitioners led by Mr Kalifani Chemutai before the elections are held.
When Daily Monitor contacted him yesterday, Maj Juma Seiko, the incumbent chairperson of SECU, said they were ready for the meeting.
“We have been waiting for so long and this meeting also clarifies that the meeting which was held by a group of delegates in March was illegal,” Maj Seiko said.
In a March 18 meeting in Kapchorwa Town, a group of delegates led by Mr Chemutai elected Mr George Toskin to replace Maj Seiko as the chairperson even after the Ministry of Trade had cancelled the same meeting.
Maj Seiko has been at the helm of SECU management since 2009.
