Mbarara. Miss Tourism Ankole 2014-15 has organised a charity run to raise funds to save lives of children in need of surgery.
The campaign, launched at Holy Innocents Hospital in Mbarara on Monday, is intended to raise Shs3 billion for the installation of a theatre at the hospital.
The run will take place on June 27 in Mbarara. The hospital was started by Mbarara Archdiocese.
Speaking at the launch, Dr Andrew Ndamira, the hospital medical director, said despite the big number of children, they treat annually from all districts in western Uganda, they lack an operating theatre to handle complications.
“The major challenge we have here is that we do not have facilities for operations. There are quite a number of children who come here with complications requiring surgery but unfortunately, we turn them away because we don’t have facilities to look after them,” Dr Ndamira said.
Ms Stella Kabazeire Rugunda, the event organiser, said Olympic Gold medalist Stephen Kiprotich will be the guest runner while Archbishop Paul K. Bakyenga of Mbarara Archdiocese will be the chief runner.
Tourism minister Maria Mutagamba will also grace the event.
“I call upon everyone to come and be part of this noble cause so that we save lives of children, the future of Uganda,” Ms Rugunda said.
Fr Benedict Njunwoha, who represented Archbishop Bakyenga, said: “Having a theatre here is a noble cause, whoever has a good heart should come so that we save children.
