BUSIA: Unknown people armed with AK47 and a pistol shot dead a 57-year-old-foreign currency trader in Busia town.

It is reported that Ahamed Hassan Omar, a Somali national who has been residing at Marachi “D” village, Eastern Division in Busia Municipality, was shot dead at about 6pm on Sunday by three unknown assailants who were riding on a Boda boda.

Eye witnesses told Daily Monitor that three gunmen walked up to the deceased, demanded for money, but he hesitated which prompted them to shoot him dead.

“After shooting him, the gunmen jumped on the waiting Boda boda and sped off,” an eye witness who preferred anonymity said.

The Bukedi region police spokesperson, Mr Sowali Kamulya confirmed the gruesome incident and said investigations are ongoing.

“The scene was visited immediately and body taken at BUSIA health centre IV for postmortem. Suspects still at large, we are working hand in hand with Police Flying Squad Unit to have the assailants arrested,” Mr Kamulya said.

At the scene, many people were heard lamenting the apparent ease at which criminal elements are roaming in the district and calling on the police to step up their anti-crime operations.
