The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has appointed Italian-born Rev Fr Damiano Giulio Guzzetti to replace Bishop Henry Ssentongo Aparolianam, 77. as Bishop of Moroto Diocese.

The announcement was made by Archbishop-elect Emmanuel Obbo of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Tororo.

“The Holy Father has announced and we have all the support for the new shepherd he has chosen for our brothers and sisters in Moroto,” Archbishop Obbo said on Friday.

Fr Phillip Odii, the communications secretary of the Catholic Secretariat in Kampala, said Fr Guzzetti’s appointment was made on February 20.

The Rev Guzzetti, who was born on July 15, 1959 in Turate, Italy and ordained priest on September 1989, becomes the fourth Bishop of Moroto Diocese.

The diocese was created on March 22, 1965 with the late Bishop Sisto Mazzoldi as its first prelate.

Bishop Mazzoldi was succeeded by Bishop Paul Kalanda who was later in 1992 transferred to Fort Portal Diocese. Bishop Ssentongo then took over and has been running the diocese to date.
