Moroto. Government has completed the construction of the Shs25b building at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital expected to accommodate more than 500 patients.
While handing over the building to the hospital management on Tuesday, Mr Richard Mugulusi, the arch design project manager, said the structure has 10 departments, including an outpatient section, emergency wards for causalities and recovery.
“This is the first phase of the project. We are expecting phase two that will be used for the construction of inpatients,” he said.
Mr Mugulusi said Moroto hospital was one of the ninth health facilities government, through the support from World Bank, uplifted.
He said other hospitals include Iganga General Hospital, Nakaseke, Nebbi, Moyo, Kiryandongo and Mityana.
Mr Eliseo Oyoo, the clerk of works in the Ministry of Health, advised the hospital management to ensure the building is used properly.
“Government has put a lot of money in this building, so please administration make sure that nothing will be destroyed in this building,” he said.
Dr Filbert Nyeko, the hospital director, lauded government for the new outpatient block, saying it would provide quality services to the people of Karamoja and other regions.
“On behalf of Moroto hospital, I am very appreciative to government for this new block which will now attract our people to the hospital,” Dr Nyeko said.
He said government has also constructed 32 modern houses for staff which has enabled the hospital to accommodate 60 staff.
He said out of 166 staff that the hospital has, only 60 have been accommodated.
Dr Nyeko said government also drilled two boreholes, one of them solar powered while one is connected to the national electricity grid to help supply water to the hospital.
However, Dr Nyeko expressed worries of increased expenditure that the facility will incur in paying water and electricity bills and appealed for help from the Ministry of Health.
