Mosquito net distribution campaign moves to the Eastern Region

The Mosquito nets distribution campaign has moved to the Eastern region as the Ministry of Health embarks on fighting new Malaria infections in Uganda.

The disease remains the leading cause of death and patient- admissions in most health facilities around the country.
While addressing a Press Conference in Kampala yesterday, the State Minister of Health in charge of General Duties, Ms Sarah Opendi said a total of 2.6million mosquito nets will be distributed in the second wave of the campaign with an aim of protecting over five million Ugandans.

“Distribution of nets for districts in wave two will take place this weekend on Saturday March 25th and Sunday March 26th in the 22 districts of Teso and Karamoja,” Ms Opendi said.
She added that this is part of a 24 million nation-wide mosquito net distribution campaign launched by the Prime Minister last month. The Shs360billion exercise is supported with funds from Global Fund, DFID through UNICEF, USAID/PMI and Against Malaria Foundation (AMF).

The districts targeted under the second wave include: Dokolo, Budaka, Bududa, Amuria, Bukedea, Bulambuli, Kaberamaido, Katakwi, Kumi, Manafwa, Ngora, Serere, Sironko, Soroti, Abim, Amolatar, Amudat, Kaabong, Kotido, Moroto, Nakapiripiriti .

In an interview with this newspaper, Dr Jimmy Opigo, the head of the National Malaria control Programme said that about 4.5million long-lasting treated mosquito nets have already been distributed to 22 districts in Northern and West Nile during the first wave.

Commenting about the 10 high burden districts of Northern Uganda, Dr Opigo said that due to the intervention of the Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS), new malaria cases reported per week have dropped to 15,000 up from 60,000 cases at the time of reported outbreak.
He added that households should register for the net with a VHT and non-registered persons will not receive nets.
According to Dr Opigo, the nets will be distributed in six waves based on the current Malaria prevalence. Each wave has an average of 22 districts apart from the sixth wave which comprises of Kampala and Wakiso.

Wave Three includes: Buliisa, Kiryandongo, Masindi, Ntoroko, Bukwo, Kapchwora, Kween, Bugiri, Busia , Butaleja, Buyende, Iganga, Jinja, Kaliro, Kamuli, Kibuku, Luuka, Mayuge, Mbale, Namayingo, Namutumba, Pallisa, Tororo. Registration of households in the beneficiary districts will take place in the second week of April and will later be followed by the distribution taking place on May 10.

Wave Four; Bundibugyo, Hoima, Kabarole, Kamwenge, Kasese, Kibale, Kagadi, Kakumiiro, Kyegegwa, Kyenjojo, Buhweju, Bushenyi, Ibanda, Isingiro, Kabale , Rubanda, Kanungu, Kiruhura, Kisoro, Mbarara, Mitooma , Ntungamo, Rubirizi, Rukungiri, Sheema. Registration of households in the beneficiary districts will take place in the last week of April, followed by the distribution which will take place on June 4th 2017.

Wave Five; Mubende, Bukomansimbi, Butambala, Gomba, Kalangala, Kalungu, Kayunga, Kiboga, Kyankwanzi, Luwero, Lwengo, Lyantonde, Masaka, Mityana, Mpigi, Nakaseke, Mukono, Buikwe, Buvuma, Nakasongola, Rakai, Sembabule. Registration of households in the beneficiary districts will take place on June 12th 2017 and will later be followed by the distribution taking place on July 8th 2017.
