Mpigi accident claims one,10 injured

MPIGI. 

Police in Mpigi district is hunting for a driver of a taxi who escaped from traffic police officers at their check point stationed at Kampiringisa in Kamengo Sub-county and caused a fatal accident leaving one dead and 10 injured.

Police said a yet to be identified driver took off because he feared to be arrested and in the process of panicking on the road, he caused an accident that happened at Kalandazi swamp, a black spot in Buwama Sub-county along the Kampala – Masaka Highway on Saturday afternoon.

“A one Lawrence Nyamuguruzi, 58, a resident of Lwengo district died but we are trying to get the trouble causer (driver) and be prosecuted on charges of reckless driving, over speeding and causing an accident,” a traffic policeman who preferred anonymity because he is not the official police spokesperson told this reporter.

“The commuter taxi (registration number UBA 497Z) overturned three times and it was heading to Kyotera from Kampala. We were telling the driver to reduce the speed but he kept a deaf ear and you see what he eventually caused to us!” Mr. Abdu Kamya, a survivor said.

Some of the injured people include; a 31-year-old male adult Ahimbisibwe from Rwejanza in Kamwenge district, Umar Bukenya and his seven-year-old son Muslim Zziwa of Lyantonde, Kamugisha from Rwesiga in Rakai district, Robert Turyahoza also from Rakai, Atukunda from Kagganda village in Kyotera district, a 24-year-old Nassozi of Bulamazi-Bujuuko in Mpigi district, Teopista Nayebale of Lyantonde, Issa Rutebemberwa,a resident of Manda zone in Makerere – kampala and Annet kibisi from Mukono district.

The body of the deceased and the injured people were taken to Gombe Hospital for post-mortem and treatment respectively while the vehicle was towed to Buwama Police Station for custody as investigations continue.
