The first phase of the  Shs6.7 billion water project that is intended to reduce water shortage in Mawokota South, Mpigi District has been commissioned.

The project is privately funded by Mawokota South Member of Parliament Kiying Bbosa.

This project, according to the MP will enable 68,000 Mawokota South residents access safe clean water using gravitation system.

“Residents have been grappling with water shortage problem and most of them draw water unsafe sources like exposing themselves to water-borne diseases,” Mr Bbosa said at Kayabwe at the weekend while commissioning the first phase of the project.

He said his father, Bbosa Lutalo; a Kampala businessman is co-funding the project.

A 20-litre jerrycan of water goes for Shs500 in Kayabwe town but the project will bring the cost to Shs200, according to the MP.

He said Shs2 billion has so far been invested but appealed to government, particularly President Yoweri Museveni to link them to financial institutions that could fund the project at low interest rates.

“If President Museveni can let us access a soft loan of about 4 percent per annum, the project will be completed in a record time,” he said.

Mpigi Resident District Commission Fred Bamwine urged residents not to vandalise the water facility.
