The Army General Court Martial sitting in Kasese at the weekend granted bail to two Rwenzururu Kingdom ministers. The court based its decision on grounds that their lawyers produced sufficient reasons and presented credible sureties before court.

The ministers granted bail are, Mr Aganatiya Katya, the minister for culture and Mr Elly Nyakango Thembo, the minister for Kyatenga affairs (DRC). They cited ill-health while applying for bail on August 22.

Court resumed on October 23 in Kasese. The duo is among the 54 people on trial for allegedly taking part in the July 5 attacks that left 12 people dead in Kasese District. The defense lawyers told court that the duo had no capacity to frustrate the state by jumping bail saying two other ministers were on bail and court had not had any complaints.

The other two are former Rwenzururu minister Noah Nzaghale, and the veterans’ chairperson, Mr Yolamu Mulima.
The court martial chaired by Maj Gen Levi Karuhanga granted the two court bail and Shs10 million, not cash each for the 12 counts of murder and Shs5 million not cash each for the five counts of attempted murder.

However, Maj Gen Karuhanga told court that the bail was to be cancelled any time if the conditions given to them were not adhered to.

The conditions include not travelling outside Kasese District without the consent of the Kasese OC/CIID and reporting to his office every two weeks.

Other co-accused were further remanded to Katojo Government Prison in Fort Portal until December 1 when court resumes for further hearing.
