Makerere University Business School (Mubs) has began teaching oil and gas courses, with a target on Ugandans involved in businesses that will directly feed into the sector when exploration starts.

The training to be delivered in partnership with Quest energy, an oil and gas consulting firm, is meant to bridge the human resource gap the country has grappled with since the discovery of oil.

Announcing the development at a press conference in Kampala last Friday, Mr Patrick Ruharuza, the CEO of Quest Energy, said the training comes amid a host of challenges that the other East African Community states have encountered following the discovery of oil deposits.

“Beyond the prevailing global deficit for petroleum engineering skills, we as a nation need to build strong oil and gas management capacity in order to successfully translate this natural resource into lasting development outcomes,” Mr Ruharuza said.
He added that through the training, the beneficiaries would be equipped with business management skills they could use to exploit other resources, even when the oil is depleted because oil and gas are strategic resources that most countries have used to develop their other sectors.

Mr Levi Kabagambe, the head of department Management Sciences at Mubs, said the courses will be segmented into 12 weeks.
